Abstract

Introduction: Obesity can cause heart failure by different mechanisms; however, in patients diagnosed with that disease it behaves as a protective factor for mortality.

Objective: To evaluate obesity as a prognostic factor in mortality in women with heart failure.

Methods: A prospective observational cohort study was conducted in female patients who attended the protocolized heart failure consultation from October 2018 to March 2023. The sample consisted of 178 women. Survival was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method to estimate the prognostic effect of the obesity variable on mortality. The Cox regression model was used.

Results: It was observed that patients with obesity and overweight had better survival than normopeso patients, without being statistically significant (Log Rank p = 3.794). In the Cox regression model, the overweight and obese variables presented risk adjusted below 1 (0.557 and 0897, respectively).

Conclusions: In obese women with heart failure the phenomenon of paradoxical obesity was observed in relation to mortality.
