Obesity in the prognosis of women with chronic heart failure
Keywords:
heart failure, obesity, prognosis, female.Abstract
Introduction: Obesity can lead to heart failure through different mechanisms; however, it is a protective factor against mortality for patients diagnosed with the disease.
Objective: To describe the latest findings on obesity in the prognosis of women with chronic heart failure.
Methods: A non-systematic review of 31 documents published in PubMed, Ebsco, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and SciELO was conducted. Heart failure, obesity, prognosis, and female were used as keywords for the search.
Results: In the advanced stage of chronic heart failure, obesity improves the prognosis, since it acts as protective factor against mortality. Sex-dependent differences in such a paradox are described, with better prognosis and lower mortality for females.
Conclusions: Obese women with heart failure have a better long-term prognosis than men with the same disease.
