Mortality from acute myocardial infarction and their relationship with solar and geomagnetic storms in Guantanamo province

Abstract

Objective: To compare the behavior of the frequency of mortality from myocardial infarction (MI) under solar and geomagnetic disturbance in the group and period studied, with some previous reported results.

Method: The information in the daily mortality rate was collected by documented myocardial infarction confirmed in selected medical centers in Guantanamo province for a period of 10 years (2001-2010). The data was subjected to statistical analysis superposed epoch with daily resolution using windows up to 9 days, centered on days with high geomagnetic activity, analyzing the frequency of deaths from myocardial around active days.

Results: a different timing, must be seen in terms of deaths or MI in disturbed periods of quiet geomagnetic activity, identifying high correspondence between the disturbed periods and increased stroke frequency, similarly as described in previous research.

Conclusions: There is a relationship between increased geomagnetic activity and frequency of mortality from acute myocardial infarction, to be in high agreement with the results of previous studies in Cuba and elsewhere.
