Abstract

Primary myxoid degeneration is characterized by fragmentation of type VI collagen of the cardiac valvular fibrous cap and the presence of broken and granular elastic fibres. It is accompanied by fibrosis, thickening, dehiscence, valvular rupture and, in some cases, chordae tendineae rupture, which can lead to prolapse and severe cardiac valvular regurgitation. We describe the case of a 54-year-old patient with myxoid degeneration of all four heart valves, with no evidence of similar cases in the literature, and review the disease, its diagnosis and treatment.
