Effectiveness of an educational intervention on modifiable risk factors in hypertensive patients

Introduction: The World Health Organization points out that arterial hypertension is a preventable disease that affects about one billion people in the world.
Objectives: To apply an educational intervention on modifiable risk factors in hypertensive patients between June 2020 and June 2022 with the aim of raising the level of knowledge and achieving better control of the disease.
Methods: An experimental, randomized and controlled study was carried out in the hypertensive population of the Family Doctor's Office No. 6, belonging to the Teaching Polyclinic "Eastern Area" of the municipality of Camagüey. The universe was constituted by 150 patients, divided in two groups, one called study and the other control, of 75 members each one that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. To evaluate the results of the implemented strategy, a questionnaire was applied before and after.
Results: Ages between 60 and 70 years predominated in both groups with 33.3% and 25.3%, respectively; the most frequent was the female gender for both, with 41 and 45%; once the intervention was applied, sedentary lifestyle (24/75), stress (42.7%) and obesity (30.7%) decreased. In the study group, only 12 events (16%) were collected after the educational actions, which shows a statistically significant improvement.
Conclusions: It was possible to increase the level of knowledge and modify several risk factors in the study population.
