Abstract

There are several complications secondary to the placement of venous catheters; the mechanical, infectious and thrombotic complications are among them. Venous catheter-associated thrombosis is caused by blood stasis and mechanical or chemical endothelial damage, which activates the coagulation cascade, depending on the type of patient, characteristics of the catheter, and the skill and technique of the person who palces it. We report the case of a patient with a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease, she carried a Mahurkar catheter for hemodialysis; a meandering thrombus attached to the tricuspid valve was evidenced. This condition could be caused by mechanical valve damage and intraluminal thrombosis of the catheter, which served as a mold to acquire this peculiar shape. A review of the subject is carried out in order to know the thrombotic complications secondary to the placement of venous catheters, as well as the diagnostic approach, treatment and prognosis.
