Abstract

Introduction: In a prevalence survey conducted by the World Health Organization in 55 hospitals in 14 countries found that on average 8.7% of patients admitted to hospital have a nosocomial infection. This problem increases the average length of stay and increased hospital costs. In 2013 there was an outbreak of nosocomial sepsis caused by Acinetobacter spp at the Institute of Cardiology Cardiovascular Surgery.

Objective: To study hospital demurrage costs as a result of an outbreak of nosocomial sepsis in the Institute of Cardiology Cardiovascular Surgery in 2013.

Method: a partial economic evaluation of cost analysis type in a time horizon of one year was carried out. The currency used was the Cuban peso. For comparisons with other countries the equivalent of a Cuban peso equals one dollar was considered. The research was conducted with the total number of patients (18) who developed sepsis. Data were obtained from clinical records and led to an Excel spreadsheet. From this information tables were prepared.

Results: Female sex predominated and the age groups of 61-70 and 71-80 years. There were 5 deaths (27.7%). The 53.1% of the total stay corresponded to demurrage for sepsis. The total cost was 102 124, 11 pesos, with an average of 5 per patient 673.56 pesos.

Conclusion: The money spent on the care of patients suffering from nosocomial sepsis is an opportunity cost to the center stopped using the best available alternative.
