Abstract

Introduction: The Cuban Nation carries a legendary tradition of collaboration of medical services, with a presence in several continents, constituting a reference for many people worldwide.

Objectives: The aim of this article is to review the results of the work of cardiovascular surgery 1st team sent by Cuba to make an international collaboration through an agreement between the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba and the Social Security Institute of Peru.

Method: The medical records of all patients operated in the cardiovascular surgery service Almanzor Aguinaga Asenjo National Hospital in Chiclayo, Peru in the period between April 1993 and December 1996 were reviewed, taking the data on sex, age, diagnosis, types of operations, survival, mortality, economic costs and benefits.

Conclusions: In December of 1996 to terminate the agreement, allowed the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery Hospital AA Asenjo Chiclayo operating regularly, with good results for a comenzante Service and in the hands of local surgeons. The cooperation between Cuba and Peru in the field of cardiovascular surgery is a good example of South-South cooperation, which can be a useful tool to promote the skills in this field of medicine and produce social and economic benefits in countries developing.
