Abstract

During the last years, there have been advances in the treatment of hypertensive crises with significant changes of their therapeutic approach. A brief review on this topic is made, giving emphasis to the recommendations of the Sixth Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure. The use of nifedipine is discussed and an update of the most recently used drugs in hypertensive emergencies (esmolol, nicardipine and phenoldopam) is included.
