Abstract

Medical records of 40 deceased patients who presentes with chronic renal failure are revised, and the clinical and laboratory findings are correlated with electrocardiographic, telecardiographic, and echocardiographic findings. The statistical analysis was performed by the analysis of variance. From the clinical elements of interest, no correlation was found between acute pulmonary edema and the atypic thoracic pain with findings of important heart disease diagnosed by echocardiography and corroborated in the autopsy. Regarding the diagnosis of left ventricular hyperthrophy, the electrocardiogram, telecardiogram, and the echocardiogram yielded a specificity of 57.5 %, 27.5 % and 97.36 % respectively, while sensitivity was found to be of 50 %, 100 %, and 66 %.

Taking into account other results, it is concluded that it is necessary to include M-mode echocardiography to evaluate cardiac morphological function in patients presenting with chronic renal failure. Also the most important alterations that are observed in our patients on their cardiac function are pointed out.
