Abstract

The present paper was aimed at reviewing the oxidative stress and its role in pathogenesis of different processes, specially in cardiovascular diseases. It has been demostrated that the body has a series of mechanisms through which it produces and at the same time limits the production of reactive oxygen species. The antioxidant defense protects the tissues from the oxidative damage through enzimes as dismutase superoxide, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and catalase. An excess of free radicals commonly initiates the damage of the vascular wall and LDL cholesterol is involved in this process. A reduction in the incidence of cardiovascular diseases with individual supplements of antioxidants has been observed.
