Abstract

10 years after the introduction of coronary angioplasty by percutaneous transluminal route (PTCA), it was implanted the first intracoronary metal prothesis in man, which reduced 2 of the inconveniences of PTCA: sudden occlusion of the recently dilated vessel and the restenosis that appears during the 6 months following a successful PTCA in approximately 30% of the patients. The use of Stent has spread rapidly all over the world, including our country, where only in our institute more than 150 have been implanted. However, the use of stents has also risks and its indications should be specified. In the present paper, a review is made on the historical aspect, the different types of stents available, the implantation technique, the indications, complications and restenosis.
