Acute effect of smoking on the diastolic function in patients with ischemic heart disease

Abstract

The acute effects of smoking on the diastolic function of the left  ventricle were studied through the analysis of the transmitral flow by Doppler echocardiography in 15 patients with angiographical confirmed ischemic heart disease. The results were compared with those of a control group of sound patients. The parameters were analyzed before smoking and while the patient was smoking a cigarette after 12 hours of abstinence. Heart rate increased significantly in both groups and it was observed a reduction of the E area integral (9.93 vs 7.40) p <0.05 and of the E area integral/A area integral relation ship (2.92 vs 1.44) p < 0.01 in the group of ischemic patients. The variables of the diastolic function were not modified in  the control group. The alterations of the diastolic function are the result of a prolonged relaxation determined by myocardial ischemia after smoking a cigarette.
